What a Sew-In Weave Is

Two parts, and the first one decides the quality of the second.

Your own hair is cornrowed flat to the scalp into a foundation. The pattern of that foundation is not decorative — it determines where the wefts sit, how flat the finished hair lies, and how comfortable the install is to wear. It is cornrow work, and it is done properly here because we do it all day.

Then the wefts are sewn onto those cornrows with a needle and thread, row by row. Nothing is glued and nothing is bonded to your own strands. When the install comes out, your hair is as it was, having spent the whole period braided and protected underneath.

That is the real argument for a sew-in over daily styling: your own hair takes no heat and no manipulation for weeks.

Weave or Sew-In? The Words People Mix Up

Weave is the general word for adding extension hair to make your own hair longer or fuller.

Sew-in is one method of doing it — literally sewing wefts onto a braided foundation. Other methods exist: bonding, clips, tapes, micro-links. They are different jobs with different costs and different risks.

When someone says “I want a weave” in this area, they usually mean a sew-in. But because the words are used loosely, tell us which you mean, or send a photo — it changes the appointment.

Choose Your Install

Full Sew-In

All of your own hair is braided down and covered. Nothing of your own hair is left out, which means no daily heat at all and the most protection for the hair underneath.

Partial Sew-In

Part of your own hair is left out — usually at the top or around the parting — and blended with the wefts. It reads more naturally at the hairline, at the cost of that left-out section needing styling.

Which one suits you depends on the look you want and on how your own hair is doing right now. We will tell you honestly which we would recommend.

What Weaving Costs at Our Spring Salon

Weaving starts at $60 — alongside loc maintenance, the lowest starting point on our menu.

Be aware of what that figure is and is not. A starting price on a sew-in is not a fixed quote, because installs differ enormously: a partial install on short hair and a full install on long, dense hair are not the same job.

The hair is separate. Our figure covers the work. You bring your own wefts or buy them here, billed separately — and how much you need depends on the install and the length you want, which is what the photo tells us. When you compare prices elsewhere, check whether their number covers the hair; that difference alone explains most of the gap between two quotes for the same style.

Sew-In or Wig?

An honest comparison, because plenty of clients are genuinely undecided.

A wig comes off. That is its whole advantage: no commitment, change it daily, remove it at night, and nothing is attached to you. The trade-off is that you are putting it on every day, and a wig unit that looks convincing costs real money.

A sew-in stays. You wake up finished, it moves like your own hair because it is attached to your own hair, and your own hair is braided and protected underneath the entire time. The trade-off is that it is fixed for the period you wear it, and it needs a proper takedown.

If you want to change your look constantly, a wig. If you want to stop thinking about your hair every morning for several weeks, a sew-in.

What Happens at Your Appointment

Come with clean, dry, detangled hair. Washed the day before is ideal — the foundation braids flatter on dry hair, and a flat foundation is the difference between a sew-in that looks right and one that does not.

Bring your hair, or call before you buy it. If you have already bought your wefts, bring them. If you have not, call first so you buy the right amount for the length and fullness you are picturing.

On arrival. Your stylist looks at your hair and your photo, tells you which install she would recommend, and confirms the price with you. Nothing starts before you agree the number.

Caring for a Sew-In in Houston Humidity

The hair on top is the visible part. The hair underneath is the part that matters.

• Wash and dry the foundation, properly. Diluted shampoo down the tracks, rinsed carefully, and then dried all the way through. Damp trapped under a full sew-in in a north Houston August is the single most common thing that goes wrong with this style.
• Satin bonnet at night. It keeps the wefts from tangling and keeps lint out of the tracks.
• Oil the scalp along the tracks, not the wefts. Your own hair is what needs it.
• Do not leave it in too long. Your own hair keeps growing underneath, and the foundation loosens as it does. A sew-in left in well past its point starts pulling at the tracks, and that is when damage happens — not from the install itself.

When We’ll Tell You to Wait

A sew-in is only as safe as the foundation and the tension. Braided too tight, it pulls at the tracks all day. Left in too long, it pulls as your own hair grows.

If your edges are thin or breaking, we will suggest a different service rather than braid a foundation across a fragile hairline. If your scalp is irritated, we will ask you to come back when it has calmed down. And if your own hair is too short to hold a foundation, we will tell you that instead of taking the booking.
