Butterfly Locs in Spring, TX
Distressed locs with deliberate loops and a soft, open texture — the look that reads lived-in the day it goes in. Starting at $200 at our Kuykendahl Road salon in Spring.
What Makes a Loc a Butterfly Loc
A butterfly loc is a faux loc that has been deliberately left imperfect.
Your own hair is braided or twisted first. Wavy extension hair is then wrapped around that base — and instead of being pulled tight and smooth, it is pushed and shaped so that small loops sit along the length of every loc. Those loops are the butterfly effect the style is named for.
The finished loc is lighter and more open than a smooth faux loc. It catches light differently, it moves more, and it looks like a style you have been wearing for weeks rather than one you had installed this morning.
It is also, unavoidably, slower to make. Wrapping is one pass; wrapping and then distressing every loc by hand is two. That is where the price lives.
Choose Your Length and Texture
Length changes this style more than it changes almost any other. Longer butterfly locs mean more wrapping, more distressing and more weight.
Short and Bob-Length Butterfly Locs
The lightest version and the shortest appointment. Sits at the jaw or shoulder, moves well, and is the easiest of the three to sleep in.
A good first butterfly loc install if you have not worn locs before.
Mid-Back Butterfly Locs
The most-booked length. Long enough to tie back and style, short enough to stay comfortable through a full day.
Waist-Length and Beyond
The most dramatic and the heaviest. Worth being honest with yourself about: long butterfly locs are a commitment in weight as well as in price, and they need more care at night.
We will talk you through the weight before we install this length, not after.
A Style You Don’t See Listed?
Butterfly locs come in more colors, curl patterns and finishes than three length options can cover — ombré, burgundy, honey, blends, tighter or looser loops.
Bring or send a photo of what you want and we agree the price together before the install starts. Whatever the variation, if you can show it to us we can quote it.

What Butterfly Locs Cost at Our Spring Salon
Butterfly locs start at $200.
The comparison worth knowing: a butterfly loc install advertised in Houston commonly runs around $220 for roughly three and a half hours. Our starting point sits under that, in a salon that is north of the Beltway rather than inside it.
You will also see numbers as low as $100 advertised further out. Those are almost always a shorter length or a lighter density. When you compare any two prices, check what each one covers — whether the hair is included is the single biggest reason two quotes for the same style look nothing alike.
What moves the price from $200:
- Length. The single biggest factor on this style.
- Density. How many locs, and how full you want the finished head.
- How distressed you want them. More loops means more hand work.
- Hair is separate. The price above covers the braiding. The hair itself is not included — bring your own, or buy it here and we bill it separately.
How much hair will you need? That depends on the style and on the exact look you are going for, so there is no single number we can print. Send us the photo before you buy anything and we will tell you how many packs to get and which texture suits the style.
The starting price is a starting point, not the whole answer. Send a photo and we agree the figure before anything begins. Flat-rate once agreed.

Butterfly Locs or Faux Locs?
Short version: butterfly locs are faux locs with the loops left in on purpose.
Smooth faux locs read polished and uniform. Butterfly locs read textured and undone. They are installed the same way up to the point where one is smoothed down and the other is opened up — which is also why butterfly locs take longer and cost more.
If you want the comparison in full, including price, weight and how each one ages, it is on our faux locs page.

What Happens at Your Appointment
Come prepared. Clean, detangled, completely dry hair, washed the day before if you can. This is a long appointment — eat first.
Bring a reference photo. Butterfly locs vary enormously in loop density and color. A photo settles in ten seconds what a description takes ten minutes to get wrong, and it is what we price from.
On arrival. Your braider confirms the length, the density, how distressed you want them and the final price. Nothing starts before you have agreed the number.
Caring for Butterfly Locs in Houston Humidity
The loops are the whole point of the style and also the part that suffers first:
- Satin bonnet every night. Not optional here. The loops tangle against cotton and flatten under your own weight while you sleep.
- Do not over-wet them. A light mist and a scalp wash between the parts. Soaking the locs makes the wrapped hair swell and the loops collapse.
- Dry the scalp properly. Damp trapped under a full install of locs is the one thing that will genuinely bother you here in August.
- Leave the loops alone. Picking at them to “fix” one usually opens two more. They are supposed to be uneven.
Butterfly locs hold their look through north Houston humidity better than smooth styles do — the texture is already broken up, so frizz has nothing to ruin.
When We’ll Tell You to Wait
Weight is the honest concern with this style. A full head of long butterfly locs carries real load on the braided base underneath, and that base sits at your hairline.
If your edges are thin or actively breaking, we will suggest a shorter length or a lighter density rather than install what you asked for and let you find out in three weeks. If your scalp is irritated or broken, we will ask you to come back.
That conversation happens before the appointment, not during it.
Why Book in Spring Instead of Driving Into Houston
The salons that come up for butterfly locs around here sit inside Houston or further south — Northwest Freeway, Westheimer, out toward Sugar Land. From Spring, Klein or Tomball, every one of them is a drive each way, on top of one of the longer appointments on any braiding menu.
We are at 17907 Kuykendahl Rd, Suite 200, between Highway 249 and I-45, with parking on site. Open seven days a week.
If you live in Spring, Klein, Tomball, The Woodlands, Champions, Cypress or Humble, we are the closer option — and on this service that is worth more than it sounds, because you will be in the chair for a while.
Butterfly Locs: Your Questions Answered
How much does it cost to get butterfly locs? Butterfly locs at Diamond Luxury African Hair Braiding in Spring, TX start at $200. For comparison, a butterfly loc install advertised in Houston commonly runs around $220 for about three and a half hours. The final figure depends on length, density and how distressed you want the locs. The hair is not included in that price — bring your own or buy it at the salon, billed separately — and we agree your figure with you from a photo before the install begins.
What hair do I buy for butterfly locs, and how many packs? Butterfly locs are made with wavy extension hair wrapped over your braided base. How many packs you need depends on the length you want and how dense the finished head should be, so there is no single number that fits everyone — a bob-length install and a waist-length one are not close. The hair is not included in the price of the style at our Spring, TX salon: you can bring your own, or buy it here and we bill it separately. Send or bring a photo before you buy anything and we will tell you exactly how much to get and which texture suits the look. Call (346) 360-4881.
Are butterfly locs damaging? Not in themselves. The risk with any loc style is weight and tension at the hairline, not the locs. Butterfly locs are lighter than smooth faux locs of the same length because the texture is open rather than packed, which helps. What matters more is the braided base underneath: installed too tight, or made too long and dense for your hair to carry, any loc style will stress your edges. If your edges are thin or breaking, we will recommend a shorter length or a lighter density before we install, and we will say so rather than take the booking.
Where can I get butterfly locs done near Spring, TX? Diamond Luxury African Hair Braiding installs butterfly locs at 17907 Kuykendahl Rd, Suite 200, Spring, TX 77379, between Highway 249 and I-45, with parking on site. The salons that rank for butterfly locs in this area are mostly inside Houston or further south toward Sugar Land, which means a drive each way from Spring, Klein, Tomball or The Woodlands. Call (346) 360-4881 to book.
What is the difference between butterfly locs and faux locs? Butterfly locs are faux locs that have been deliberately distressed. Both start with your own hair braided or twisted and wavy extension hair wrapped around that base. On smooth faux locs the wrap is pulled down flat for a polished, uniform finish; on butterfly locs it is pushed and shaped so small loops sit along the length. That extra hand work is why butterfly locs take longer and start higher. Smooth faux locs read polished; butterfly locs read textured and lived-in.
Can you install a butterfly loc style that is not shown on this page? Yes. Butterfly locs come in far more colors, lengths, loop densities and blends than this page can list. Bring or send a photo of the style you want and we agree the price together before the install begins. Call (346) 360-4881.
