Four things move it, and you hear which ones apply to you before we begin, never at checkout:

• Size. Small takes considerably longer than medium; medium longer than jumbo.

• Density. More hair means more squares and more time.
• Whose hair. Whether you bring your own extensions changes the quote.

Box Braids or Knotless Braids?

The short version: box braids hold a crisper part line and a bolder look; knotless braids sit flatter and put far less tension on your hairline. If your edges are already thin, start with knotless. If definition is what you are after and your hairline is strong, box braids do it better.

What Happens at Your Appointment

Come prepared. Clean, detangled, completely dry hair — washed the day before rather than the same morning, blow-dried if you can. Eat first, especially for a small install, and bring something to occupy you.

On arrival. Your braider confirms the size, the length and the final price with you. Nothing starts before you have agreed the number.

During. Say something immediately if anything pulls harder than it should. Box braids sit tighter than knotless by design, but tight is not the same as painful, and a braider can adjust tension as she works — she cannot undo it afterwards.

Caring for Box Braids in Houston Humidity

Humidity here lifts the cuticle and frizzes the root faster than in a drier climate. What actually extends an install:

• Satin bonnet or satin pillowcase, every night. Non-negotiable in this climate — cotton pulls moisture out and roughs up the braid.
• Yes, you can wash your hair. Dilute your shampoo, work it into the scalp rather than the braids, rinse thoroughly, and dry completely. Braids left damp in Houston humidity develop odor faster than most people expect.
• Oil the scalp, not the braid. A light oil along the parts. Heavy product on the braid itself builds up and drags the install down.

Not a set-and-forget style. Left in too long, the new growth at the root matts into the braid and the takedown gets rough. A protective style stops protecting past a certain point.
