Faux Locs in Spring, TX
The look of locs, worn for weeks instead of years. Wrapped over your own braided hair and taken down whenever you want. Starting at $180 at our Kuykendahl Road salon in Spring.
What Faux Locs Are — and What They Are Not
Faux locs are extensions, not locs.
Your own hair is braided or twisted into a base. Extension hair is then wrapped around each of those bases from root to tip, so the finished strand looks like a loc. When you are ready, they come out in an afternoon and your own hair is exactly as it was.
That is the whole appeal, and it is worth being clear about it: real locs are a commitment measured in years; faux locs are a style measured in weeks. Nothing about your own hair is permanently changed.
If you already have real locs and you are looking for a retwist or styling, that is a different service — see our dread and loc styling page.
Faux Locs, Soft Locs, Butterfly Locs: The Names Explained
Three names, one family, and a lot of confusion online.
Faux locs is the umbrella term: extension hair wrapped around your braided base to imitate a loc. Smooth, uniform, polished.
Butterfly locs are faux locs deliberately distressed — the wrap is pushed up so small loops sit along every loc. Textured and lived-in instead of sleek.
Soft locs is the name people use when they want the same look with a lighter, more flexible finish than a traditional tightly-wrapped faux loc. In practice the term is used differently by nearly every salon that advertises it.
Which is why the answer is always the same: bring a photo. A picture removes the whole vocabulary problem in one step, and it is what we price from.
Choose Your Length and Finish
Length is what changes this style — and what changes the price.
Shoulder and Bob-Length Faux Locs
The lightest install and the shortest appointment. Easiest to sleep in, easiest to carry through a Houston August, and the version we suggest if this is your first set.
Mid-Back Faux Locs
The most-booked length. Long enough to tie up and style, short enough to stay comfortable through a full day at work.
Long Faux Locs
The most striking and the heaviest. Longer locs mean more wrapping and more weight on the base underneath, so we will talk you through what that means for your hairline before we install, not after.
A Style You Don’t See Listed?
Faux locs come in more colors, thicknesses, finishes and blends than three length options can cover — ombré, honey, burgundy, curly ends, wrapped tips, or the lighter finish people call soft locs.
Bring or send a photo of the style you want and we agree the price together before anything starts. If you can show it to us, we can quote it.
Call (346) 360-4881 with the photo.
What Faux Locs Cost at Our Spring Salon
Faux locs start at $180.
Four things move the figure from there:
- Length. By far the biggest factor.
- Thickness and density. How many locs, and how full the finished head.
- The finish. A smooth, tightly wrapped loc and a lighter, looser one take different amounts of time.
- Hair is separate. The price above covers the braiding. The hair itself is not included — bring your own, or buy it here and we bill it separately.
How much hair will you need? That depends on the style and on the exact look you are going for, so there is no single number we can print. Send us the photo before you buy anything and we will tell you how many packs to get and which texture suits the style.
Prices advertised for locs around Houston swing wildly, and most of the low numbers you will find are a short length or a partial install. Check what each price covers before you compare figures — whether the hair is included is the single biggest reason two quotes for the same style look nothing alike.
The starting price is a starting point, not the whole answer. Send a photo and we agree the number before the install begins. Flat-rate once agreed.

Faux Locs or Butterfly Locs?
The comparison people actually need, in one place.
| Faux Locs | Butterfly Locs | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting price | $180 | $200 |
| Finish | Smooth, uniform, polished | Distressed, with deliberate loops |
| How it is made | Extension hair wrapped down flat | Wrapped, then opened up by hand |
| Appointment | Long | Longer — the distressing is a second pass |
| Weight | Denser strand for strand | Lighter and more open |
| In humidity | Smooth surface shows frizz sooner | Texture is already broken up, hides it |
| Reads as | Deliberate and finished | Lived-in and effortless |
Choose faux locs if you want the clean, defined version. Choose butterfly locs if you want the undone one — and expect to pay for the extra hand work.

What Happens at Your Appointment
Come prepared. Clean, detangled, completely dry hair, washed the day before if you can. This is a long appointment — eat beforehand.
Bring a reference photo. More useful on this service than almost any other, because “faux locs”, “soft locs” and “butterfly locs” mean different things to different salons. The photo settles it, and it is what we price from.
On arrival. Your braider confirms the length, the thickness, the finish and the final price with you. Nothing starts before you agree the number.
Caring for Faux Locs in Houston Humidity
- Satin bonnet every night. Wrapped hair frays against cotton, and fraying at the wrap is what makes a set look old.
- Wash the scalp, not the locs. Diluted shampoo along the parts, rinse carefully, and keep the wrapped lengths out of it as much as you can.
- Dry properly. A full head of locs holds water. Damp trapped at the scalp is the single most common complaint with this style, and it is entirely preventable.
- Do not re-wrap them yourself. A loc that has started to unravel at the tip is a five-minute fix in the chair and a bigger problem if you pull at it.
- Smooth locs frizz before textured ones here. If you want the longest stretch between visits through a north Houston summer, that is a real argument for butterfly locs over smooth faux locs.
When We’ll Tell You to Wait
The weight of a full head of locs sits on the braided base underneath, and that base sits at your hairline.
If your edges are thin or breaking, we will recommend a shorter length or a lighter density rather than install what you asked for and let you discover the problem in three weeks. If your scalp is irritated or broken, we will ask you to come back when it has settled.
We would rather have that conversation on the phone than halfway through your appointment.

Faux Locs: Your Questions Answered
How much does it cost to do faux locs? Faux locs at Diamond Luxury African Hair Braiding in Spring, TX start at $180. The final figure depends on length, how thick and dense you want the locs and the finish you choose. The hair is not included in that price — bring your own or buy it at the salon, billed separately. Prices advertised for locs around Houston vary widely, and the lowest numbers usually reflect a shorter length or a partial install, so check what each price covers before comparing. We agree your figure with you from a reference photo before the install begins.
What kind of hair is best for faux locs, and how many packs do I need for a full head? Faux locs are made with extension hair wrapped around your own braided or twisted base, and the texture of that hair is what decides whether the finished loc reads smooth, soft or distressed. How many packs a full head takes depends on the length and the thickness you want — a shoulder-length set and a long, dense one are very different amounts. The hair is not included in the price of the style at our Spring, TX salon: bring your own, or buy it here and we bill it separately. Send or bring a photo before you buy anything and we will tell you how much to get and which texture matches the look. Call (346) 360-4881.
Are faux locs damaging to your hair? Faux locs are one of the lower-risk extension styles, because your own hair is braided and then left alone underneath the wrap. The risk is not the locs themselves — it is weight and tension. A set that is too long or too dense for your hair to carry pulls on the braided base, and that base sits at your hairline. Two other things matter: do not leave a set in past the point where your own hair has grown out and started to tangle at the root, and do not skip drying the scalp properly after washing. If your edges are thin or breaking, we will recommend a shorter or lighter install before we take the booking.
What is the difference between faux locs and soft locs? Faux locs is the umbrella term for extension hair wrapped around your own braided hair to imitate a loc. Soft locs is the name people use for the same idea with a lighter, more flexible finish than a traditionally tight wrap. The catch is that the term is used differently by nearly every salon advertising it, so the words alone will not get you the look you have in mind. Bring or send a photo and we will tell you exactly what it takes and what it costs before anything starts.
